Ingredients:

  • about ½ kg of stale bread
  • a piece of homemade young cheese
  • 2 tablespoons of cream
  • a jug of water (about 1 l)
  • salt

Preparation:

Break the bread into larger pieces by hand. Boil water and salt in a pot, and when they are done, add pieces of bread and reduce the heat. After a few minutes, pour off the excess water, and leave enough liquid for the bread to simmer in it, stirring occasionally. Add the cheese and mix everything so that the mixture stretches and then remove from the heat. It is usually eaten by putting a mixture of bread on a plate and a little cream in the middle.

Remark:

Popara is also considered a poor man’s dish, it was usually prepared when there was excess bread. It was eaten for brunch, and sometimes as a light dinner.
